Interplanetary escape and inescapable gravity are themes found on The Point Of No Return, the latest album from Carl Jean-Louis, better known for his beat-making prowess as Dextah. The Chicago native (now residing in Northern California) is confidently following up Relentless Disillusion Redux, his acclaimed 2015 release for The Content Label. Dextah's love for heavy drums and pushing hip hop patterns is constant, but stylistic advances and technological innovations have evolved his sound beyond the present decade. The Point Of No Return is a compelling listen as Dextah's production pulls us in like falling into an approaching black hole.
And black holes play a part in the narrative of The Point Of No Return, a conceptual sci-fi album following a crew seeking refuge in outer space only to get swallowed past the event horizon. The songs follow an effort to rejoin our dimension, told through shimmering tracks like "Futuristic Vapors." That song feels like an exploration of what's unknown, as layers of synthesis, pizzicato arpeggiations, and marching beats collude for a mystical vibe. Then "Inside Your Vortex" plunges us deeper into the blackness, with its buzzing synth bass, jazzy drum figures, and discordant atmospheres transmitting something quite ominous. But signs of glimmering starlight are also present, as in cuts like "Cafe of the Mind." Here we find gentle chords washing over a sparse drum rhythm alongside subtle vinyl effects and an ecstatic lead line. Space is indeed the place.
The eight tracks on The Point Of No Return detail the full journey, with Dextah masterfully setting scenes and crafting cosmic textures. The result is a collection of sounds that are both visceral and abstract, making for another bold expedition outward from The Content Label.
